Smart Cookie Reading provides one-on-one, intensive and direct academic therapy to children who are diagnosed with dyslexia or language based disorders. Current research supported by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), has demonstrated the value of explicit, structured language teaching for all students, especially those with dyslexia.
At Smart Cookie Reading, we incorporate Multisensory Structured Language Therapy (MSLT) techniques founded on the Orton-Gillingham approach to teach reading, spelling, and writing. We utilize a multisensory approach to engage visual, auditory, and kinesthetic pathways in order to enhance memory and learning of written language. This approach teaches alphabetic patterns and words through all modalities; these links are imperative in solidifying the pathways not only for learning to read and spell, but also to engage long-term memory storage.
Session curriculum is research-based and follows MSLT training for working with dyslexic and language based-learning disorders. The MSLT method is accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) and is endorsed by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA). This method also meets the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Additionally, Smart Cookie Reading provides one-on-one Study Skills Academic Therapy and ADHD Coaching to students in grades 6-12 who need direct instruction in navigating the demands of upper level academic settings. This service is available independent of or in addition to language-based therapy.
